Body Image…

What?

Body image is how we see and feel about ourselves, and how we believe others see us. It is not always about weight, it can also be about body shape, comparisons with friends or on social media, and feeling like you need to hide how you look.

Issues with body image can lead to feelings of;

  • Low self-esteem

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Isolation and loneliness

  • Eating problems

  • Obsessing over how you look

Why?

A negative body image can develop from many influences, including;

  • Family

  • Peer groups

  • Tv/film

  • Social media

  • Social pressures.

How can I help?

If you’re worried about your own body image issues;

  • Be kind to yourself – try not to compare yourself to any images you see online. They are often digitally altered!

  • Be aware of how social media makes you feel. Take a step back if you need too to protect your mental health.

  • Try to focus on the good things, the parts of your body that you like.

  • Spend time with people who make you feel positive about yourself.

  • Think about what advice you would give to a friend going through this. Then say it to yourself.

  • Talk to someone you trust. You can also get in contact to speak to someone here, using the contact form below.

If you’re worried about someone you know;

  • Talk to them, get them to focus on what they like about themselves.

  • If you find it hard to know what to say, write down their good points as a list and tackle them one by one.

  • Sit with them in front of a mirror and thank your bodies for all the good things it does. It will feel strange, but it will encourage them to see the positives in their body.

  • If you think they’re feeling overwhelmed, encourage them to seek support.
