School Avoidance…

What?

School avoidance is a disorder affecting school-aged children who avoid attending school because attendance causes stress.

Why?

There are a variety of reasons why a child might avoid school, such as;

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Social factors

How can I help?

Try creating a morning schedule or routine. This can create a sense of security and reduce stress before leaving the house.

  • Ask your child what might help it easier for them to attend school.

  • Encourage them to do things that help them relax.

  • Recognise small achievements.

  • Try to take the pressure off.

  • Speak to the school, they may have a procedure in place that might help.
