Unhealthy relationships

What?

Unhealthy relationships can come in several formats.

  • Your partner could regularly go through your phone.

  • They could criticise you for how you look, or if you make any changes to your appearance.

  • They could bully you, including being violent. This is abuse and is never okay.

  • They could pressure you into doing sexual things or send them nudes.

  • They could stop you from seeing people or getting jealous or angry if you do socialise.

  • They could make you feel like you have no control over what you do or say.

  • They could give you gifts, but make you feel like you need to do something in return.

It is very important that these issues affect all genders and sexualities. Don’t be afraid to speak out if you’re worried.

How can I help?

If you’re worried or unsure about an aspect of your relationship, it can help to talk to someone about it. If your partner is abusive or makes you feel scared, it’s important to get support. There are several options available to you;

  • ChildLine has a helpline, if you’re a teenager or a young adult, they can help you.

  • The Women’s Aid website gives a variety of advice and they have an online chat service you can use.

  • Men can call Men’s Advice Line on 08088010327 or ManKind on 01823334244.

  • If you identify as LGBT+ you can call Galop on 08009995428.
